  • Emulator Pages Updated
Posted by erise on June 5th, 2008 at 2:22 AM

Macscene's emulator pages hadn't been updated in quite some time, and there were many dead-links and missing emulators. I've (hopefully) fixed all the links and added all the active emulators for Mac OS X. (Inactive emulators for Mac OS X can be accessed here.) The emulator pages can be accessed through the links on the left of http://www.macscene.net/emulation/.

If you notice any errors or missing emulators, let me know in the comments.

  • About Macscene
Posted by Niemann on January 30th, 2008 at 10:05 PM

I've received a number of messages and emails asking about our recent changes, and I thought that I'd do my best to explain everything I can about the current state of Emuscene/Macscene and why things had to change.

To begin with, Jon (IUG) is now the webmaster of Macscene. Emuscene Ltd. will continue to exist as my company which has been doing private web-development for the past year. Therefore, Jon will be in charge of Macscene, its direction, its staff, and he will be responsible for the news, community, and organization.

Regarding our recent forums restart, the restart was inevitable. Jon and I both agreed to upgrade the forums to the phpBB3 beta months ago, and for the most part this worked well. However, due to a corruption in the 'search_wordlist', the database began to grow without our realizing it. Once this error was noticed, I backed up the entire site and we attempted to upgrade the forums to phpBB3 (release). The upgrade script was unable to fix the corruption. After removing the 'search_wordlist' table, it became clear that the structural differences between the beta we used and the release were significant. After speaking with two of the coders behind phpBB3, it was decided that the best course of action would be to start anew. This removed all idle accounts, and saved us nearly 50mb of space on our servers.

Some have pointed out the oddity of having Macscene and Emulation.Macscene. The purpose of Macscene will be any news Jon and his staff see as pertinent to the community. This can include Apple news, rumors, gaming (Mac and console), emulation, interpretation, virtualization...really anything. The emulation section gives our die-hard emulation readers, a place to see only Emulation on the Mac news.

The rest of the changes are attempts to simplify our readers experience. The 'Features' section fell into ruin as the staff found it impossible to keep up to date. All of our subsites were removed to conserve space (making Macscene cheaper to host), and make it easier for any coder to navigate my code, once I have left.

To put it frankly, both Jon and I realized that we had two options:

First, we could continue to spend hours attempting to repair the forums every few months, and having the site go down in the meantime. We could continue to see the community slowly split into two with the die-hard emulation fans on one side and the general Apple fans (who found this place through emulation) on the other.

Or we could spend a couple days redo-ing everything, making changes which we hope everyone (ie both sides of the discussion) will enjoy and setting up Macscene to be a site which can last a decade.

  • Forum Restart
Posted by Niemann on January 29th, 2008 at 5:18 PM

With all the upgrades, hacks, betas, mergers, and other database fun, Niemann and I decided to restart the forums. But that's not all that changed.

One thing you may have noticed right before the downtime was Niemann's warning that anyone with FTP access better relocate what they needed off of the site. The reason being was that we might have lost the emuscene.com domain name. Well, it turns out we didn't. But before we knew that, we picked up some other domain names. One we picked up was macscene.net.

Before we knew we were going to get emuscene.com back in our possession (only a few hours ago that Ryan got it under his name) we were talking about expanding. But don't worry, emulation is going to be a core focus on this site, but also separate. Since we were able to hold on to emuscene.com, we are going to try to make the emuscene and macemu domain names point to emulation.macscene.net instead of the main page. So those of you who only care about emulation will get the frontpage they want. Along with an RSS feed for that alone.

So nothing has changed, everything has changed. We're still working on getting everything the way you will like it, but this should be finished soon.
