The consensus as to its exact time period varies, although all overlap within the early 1980s. Sep 1st: Luigi is Mario's younger brother. Aug 31st: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! television series and the live-action film, called Super Mario Bros., based on the video game series brought Mario into the TV and film entertainment realms. Aug 30th: Mario also makes cameo appearances: in both The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario appears on a portrait, and in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes he appears as a small statue. Aug 29th: Mario has even appeared as a playable character in NBA Street V3, and SSX on Tour, both from Electronic Arts. Aug 28th: Mario has made guest appearances in non-Mario games, such as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! where he is a referee. Aug 27th: New Super Mario Bros.'s sequel, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, is playable with four players simultaneously, and was released in different regions between November 12 and December 3, 2009 worldwide. Aug 26th: Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the fourth original 3D platformer in the Mario series, after Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Aug 25th: Super Mario Galaxy allows the player to fully circumnavigate small planets. Aug 24th: The concept for Super Mario Galaxy's game play originated from ideas taken from Super Mario 128, a tech demo shown at Nintendo Space World in 2000 to exemplify the processing power of the Nintendo GameCube. Aug 23rd: Super Mario Sunshine is a combination of Super Mario FX, Super Mario 64 2, and Super Mario 128. Amazingly, technology from these unreleased and never-completed games, were used for games over the next ten years. Aug 22nd: Toadsworth and Bowser Jr. appear for the first time in Super Mario Sunshine. Aug 21st: The development of Super Mario 64 took less than two years, but producer and director Shigeru Miyamoto had conceived of a 3D Mario game, called Super Mario FX, over five years before, while working on Star Fox. Aug 20th: In going from two to three dimensions, Super Mario 64 placed an emphasis on exploration within vast worlds that require the player to complete multiple diverse missions, replacing the linear obstacle courses of traditional platform games. Aug 19th: As one of the first three dimensional (3D) platform games, Super Mario 64 features free-roaming analog degrees of freedom, large open-ended areas, and true 3D polygons as opposed to two-dimensional (2D) sprites. Aug 18th: Despite the Super Mario Land 3 subtitle, Mario has very little to do with this installment in the series, but it is still considered a part of the Super Mario series of games. Aug 17th: At 4 megabits, Super Mario Land 2 was one of the largest games on the Game Boy at the time of its release and 8 times larger than its predecessor's capacity. Aug 16th: Super Mario Land 2 was created by director Hiroji Kiyotake rather than series creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Super Mario Land 2 is also the first game to feature Wario. Aug 15th: Miyamoto stated that he had wanted Mario to have a dinosaur companion ever since Super Mario Bros.; however, Nintendo engineers could not fit the companion into the limitations of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Aug 14th: Super Mario World, also known by the subtitle Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan,is a platform video game developed and published by Nintendo as a pack-in launch title for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. |
