Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2083

Just used GreenpOison Jailbreak to JB my 2nd gen pod for the first time. It doesn't seem to be charging anymore and this is the 4th day I've had it broken. It charged the other days but seems that when I enabled battery % it started acting up. I removed that or so it says but it still appears. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance fellas and ladies.

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2087

I had a similar issue with an iPhone 4 I used to experiment with software, it appeared to stop charging. What was odd, is that it in fact continued charging, but gave no indication that it was. No beep when plugged in, no charging icon, the battery icon just filled up when I plugged it in. Is your iPod not charging at all, or is it just not indicating that it is?

The solution for me was to reinstall everything and rejailbreak. It worked fine after that.

Just out of interest (as you've both reminded me to look into this), I'm planning to JB my 1st Gen iPod Touch now that I've had my iPhone 4 for so long and the iPT has received little use since. What methods would you recommend and how straightforward is it? Additionally what do you see as the primary benefits?

Specific app recommendations welcomed!

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2090

Ok folks I switched to the redsn0w_mac_0.9.6rc8. I did it twice and it seems to charge but ONLY when it's in standby mode. When I use it in bed at night to fall asleep I have it plugged into the wall and this ensures double strangulation from the cords . I switched because it seemed to have use less themes and tweaks than GreenpOison that bogged me down. Also turning off battery % seems to have helped a bit in the charging.

You wanted app recommendations. I have a few that I'm using.

Cydia - Kind of the point of JB

iOS 4 - Giving me all the features of that OS. I like the consolidated iPod button.
Wallpapaer - Gives me two different wall papers one for the lock screen one for the rest. I've made a nice TRON theme.

SBSettings - Giving me options to kill processes to free up MEM when I want and turn on a ton of other features or turn them off to save battery etc.

Browser Changer - Since I use Atomic Browser and can not STAND Safari on any platform this allows me to open any links in say mail in my new browser.

AptBackup - Backups your Cydia apps and settings for restoring after a new softmod.

Badge Remover - Removes those annoying red circle things that pop up when there's an update or new mail or whatever over the app or the group of apps.

Extreme Wi-Fi - Great Wi-Fi finder in the area (connected to a user database of global spots to help you find free wi-fi and find it on your own.

Flashlight - SUPER BRIGHT much better than the paid one from what I hear.

InfiniFolders - Lets you add as many apps as you want to a group. I love this as I put all my games in one scrolling folder. (PAID MOD $.99) I don't mind paying developers for their work if it's something I see quality in.

Winterboard - Modding tool does a ton of stuff, themes and more.

I'd love to see what other people are using. Post please.

Great stuff, I look forward to checking them out at some point. I've been getting into it all this morning (AFTER doing some work of course ) and went straight for redsn0w on the back of googling my hardware/firmware combination. Jailbreaking went without a hitch and I've actually restored and done it again because of the amount of cydia problems I've had. All sorts of different errors and crashes have made it pretty difficult and any potential fixes seem to revolve around cydia at least partially working so right now I'm feeling pretty glad that I actually waited until I had 2 iOS devices to do this. I'll let you know what happens but as it is it's not looking great.

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2092

Looks I've got things sorted to a point now. I've got myself to a more or less stable position although Cydia still has plenty of errors and is cripplingly slow at times (a sign of my first gen iPod). Sometimes it'll seem to crash but actually be taking its time to give me a bunch of errors. At least from here I can probably tackle some of these now that I've got things working, once I've dedicated a little more time I'm sure it'll be fine.

The best thing so far? Goodbye Stocks! SBSettings has done a great job of ridding me of those troublesome permanent Apple apps. Couple that with some nice themes for Winterboard and I'm starting to give the old iPod a newer lease of life.

Anyone ever tried any emulators on Cydia?

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2093

wait wait wait how the heck did you get rid of the base apps package? I don't see that option in that tweak. (ipod 2g 32gb nonMC) I did try an snes one using wiimote as controller. Performance was horrible. Again showing the age of my iPod I'm sure.

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2095

SBSettings has a 'More' menu within which any of the installed apps' icons can be hidden. It's a great thing to get rid of any clutter, especially since this iPod has become a very specialised gadget for me. The Gameboy emulator that I downloaded last night worked extremely well but the SNES performance was pretty slow. I'm hoping NES performance should be alright when I get around to trying it out!

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2096

Let me know what one you use please. I found those settings are removed most of the main apps well not removed but hid. Thanks man I hope to hear on the NES performance. Now if I can find a Coleco emulator this will be one happy happy happy gamer.

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2097

cydia.saurik.com/package/sbsettings - I found it through just searching on the Cydia store. You do a swipe on your menubar to bring down the options and then hit 'more' for the icon hiding. This hides the apps without deleting them. When you SSH the iPod you can see where the apps are to delete too but I figured this might be a bad idea, so hiding is just as good! Let me know how you get on!

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2098

I found them and took care of it. Found a GB/CGB emulator seemed to run ok but I have all those systems here figure I'd play the real thing. Heck was playing Zelda 2 in bed on my nes after the kid woke me up at 5:30 this morning. Nothing like the real thing!

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2100

Definitely true on the 'real thing' factor (there was a thread on just that subject a while ago wasn't there?) but as I've said before, emulation is part convenience, novelty and achievement. If I've got a load of games/systems packed into one device which is interesting/different to use and that was never designed to play those games I get a real kick out of it. Just as much as when I blow the dust out of a cart, sit inches from the telly and soak up the nostalgic goodness of a genuine old system.

Anyway, NES and GB are performing well, time to look further into the Cydia stockpile!

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2102

What Nestulator are you using? Also what GB? The one I used was ok didn't knock my socks off though. Yeah that thread I think I ranted a bit just a tad bit I know wrong forum for real thing right but this place rocks.

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2113

I've so far tried 'NES Emulator' and 'NES A.D.+', they're both about as good as eachother to be fair, certainly the games I've tried are playable. There are more there that I haven't tried yet! I've also got 'GBC A.D.+' and had no issues with it, I'll probably use it quite regularly!

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2114

I find controlling the action/platforming games quite awful, however, Final Fantasy and Zelda are great. (using SNES and NES AD+)

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2116

iMasterGear is my favourite.
I use a 4g iPod Touch... IMO most of the previous control issues were due to a lack of speed.

One of my greatest iPhone gaming achievements was finishing Aladdin on my 1g iPod Touch. It was IMPOSSIBLE due to the lag. I basically memorized the flying carpet level where you are escaping because I could not react quickly enough to avoid any obstacles. On the 4G I remembered how the game really wasn't THAT hard. This was on ZodTTDs snes4iphone by the way.

I would no longer suggest using any of ZodTTD's emulators. This is because he started out promising the world and slowly tweaking his emulators. The GBA emulator got to the point where I could play Harvest Moon reasonably well on my 2G iPod. Then the faster CPU's got released! The iPhone 3GS made his emu's run nearly at full speed. He got all arrogant and claimed he'd tweaked the emu's to be fast... but only on the 3GS. *COUGH COUGH because Apple made them faster.* They then became slower on older devices and he hasn't been heard from for aaaages (no updates...etc.) So Zod's a flop...

The emu's I'd suggest are:
- iMasterGear
- C64 (app store)
- DOSPAD (I use it mainly for Gabriel Knight)
- ScummVM (although you can buy some of the big name SCUMM/Revolution games.)
- Beneath a Steel Sky (app store)
- Broken Sword 1 & 2 (app store)
- Monkey Island 1 & 2 (app store)
- Sonic (megadrive version is on the app store)
- Golden Axe (app store)

That's the ones I use most commonly...
All the A.D.+ ones seem pretty good too. I'm glad there's lots of coders making emus for jailbroken devices these days.

Maybe my fingers are too big. Speed is not an issue, but I just cant seem to get Mario (etc) to run and jump.

How big are your fingers? Random fact... I've never met anybody with bigger hands than me. This has got me excited

I see your point though... some games that require REALLY fast reaction times or holding down multiple buttons can be a bugger. Flashback has a great layout I reckon... basically you swipe where you want to go and have set buttons. I found it easier than playing FB on my MegaDrive (which is saying something because as a little kid with a quick mind + agile fingers I really struggled on that last level where you have to plant the bomb and escape.)

Flashback... there's an app store game I really enjoyed! Pity they didn't make a series out of it...

PS - I'm still waiting on the rumoured iAmiga...

Re:Ipod question 11 years, 11 months ago #2121

Thanks for all of the recommendations, I hadn't realised they'd revamped Broken Sword 2 now as well, I quite enjoyed playing it through the first one on the DS a couple of years ago, it might be a purchase if/when I get one of the new iPads!

It's a tough one to call when you're playing these sort of games with a touch screen interface. I know that button combos are really irritating sometimes and that without a tactile d-pad I sometimes make a complete mess of Tetris/Dr. Mario/Columns etc.

I used the Joypad app for a little when we short on controllers for multiplayer emulation (it's funny to look at a bunch of people sat with a 360 controller, Wii Remote and an iPod Touch, all playing on some old game) and if you were using the iPod you were dying much more often.

Feel has got to be most of the problem, I don't ever really look at my controller when I can feel where the buttons are. I can also tell whether or not I've missed a button, unlike when you're frantically jabbing at a smooth glass surface in search of the 'kill' button!

On a portrait mode iphone, my thumbs touch with joints over the edge by a wide margin.
